Bagels

The original lyrics of 10 verses of “Bagels” or “Bublichki” in Russian  were written by poet Yakov Yadov from Odessa at the request of coupletist Gregory Krasavin for the opening season of the Odessa Theater of Miniatures for Lanzheronovskaya Street. According to the Krasavin’s memoirs, it happened in 1926. Yadov wrote the text for 30 minutes. Music was borrowed by Krasavin from a popular foxtrot. Different sources referred to “G. Bogomazov” or “S. Bogomazov” as an author of music, but there is an opinion that this was a foreign foxtrot.

With the Odessa emigrants the song hit the U.S., where at the end of 1920 existed in Yiddish as “Koyft mayne beygelekh” – and this song started the career of an American Jewish duo The Barry Sisters.
