Growing up in a wind band (my father was a professional trumpet player) I listened a lot of Russian classical and band music. One of my favorites has always been a waltz “Osenniy son” Autumn Slumber by A. Joyce. All my life I thought of it a quintessential Russian waltz. It turned out it was a waltz written by the British “king of waltzes” Archibald Joyce. One of Titanic’s passenger’s recollection of “Autumn” playing as the Titanic foundered has led to speculation that he was in fact referring to Songe d’Automne with which he would undoubtedly been familiar.
